1994, a cohort of pupils from Queen's College Yaba Lagos including yours truly was on a geography excursion trip, known as 'acculturation', to get to know parts of their gorgeous country besides the bustling city in which they studied. One of the stops? Idanre Hills, a stunning vista of hills up to 3000ft (914m) above sea level, replete with historic significance, lush views, and steps (682 of them!).

My maternal grandfather's hometown, Idanre is one of those places I visited and never wanted to leave. This intricate skirt I made from not quite 682 -- maybe 68.2? -- cutout pieces of aso-oke fabric, seeks to convey the intricacy and beauty of that historic and  agriculturally significant hillside town.

Awhum dress

This top is named for the Gurara waterfall in Niger State in north-central Nigeria, a breathtaking and vast waterfall that is about 98ft (30m) high. Sewn from complementary strips of aso-oke fabric collected over years, it features a double sleeve, some unexpected bling on the sleeves and back, and a pleated, open design that allows it fit across sizes.

Gurara top

A cold and a warm spring (98.6 °F and 158 °F respectively) meet at a confluence. This natural phenomenon, pretty cool to witness as I have, is present in several sites, including Ikogosi in Ekiti State in south western Nigeria. This dress of teals, emeralds and turquoises replete with ruffles and stripes that mirror the gentle undulations of springs, is one of our most unique creations. It is made from several strips of aso-oke diligently collected over years. If you have an event dress code brief that bridges traditional with modern, this is the festive dress for you.

Ikogosi dress

Ogbunike, a cave in Anambra state in eastern Nigeria surrounded by forests and accessible via ten tunnels, is teeming with adventure and daring. Kind of like this top, with its flared, organic-cut sleeves, subtle zig-zag motifs, and all-over discreet perforations. These patterns of perforations are typical of the ancient style of aso-oke weaving. This top rocks because it looks like it might fall apart -- the vintage fabric from which it was made, was woven in the 70s or 80s, but it's sturdy and strong, its aged property lending it organic movement as you walk, run, dance, etc in it.

Wikki is a natural warm spring in Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Our Spring/Summer 2024 collection celebrates our founder's homeland, Nigeria, by highlighting several natural landmarks/wonders of this scenic, tropical country. 

The Wikki dress is made from a dozen strips of pink aso-oke, featuring a traditional weave in which holes/perforations are incorporated in the fabric. Sere dress

Eighteen copper-alloy busts dated to 1300 C.E. were unearthed in Ife, a West African kingdom. The sculptures, representing the Ooni (ruler) of Ife, featured scarification (lines) and holes for attaching hair and moustache, reproduced as lines and dots on the covers of the Alagbede notebooks. 

Stitching? Plugs of hair? Protective porcupine-y spines? Let the OCD in you find a use for the holes.

Bifold wallet - pattern 

A pair of trousers made from over a dozen strips of specialty lamé aso-oke fabric. Aso-oke is traditionally worn for ceremonies by the Yoruba people of South-West Nigeria, where the designer is from. It is made on narrow hand-looms; strips are then sewn together to create loose clothing.
