Professor Philip Olayele Abiodun, is a Professor/ Consultant in Paediatrics and Child Health in the University of Benin/ University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, with a long and wide experience nationally and internationally. He obtained his basic medical degree, (Staatsexamen) and postgraduate degree MD at the Christian Albrecht University, Kiel (West Germany). This was followed by his specialist training (Facharzt) in Child Health at the Justus-Liebig University, Giessen, West Germany. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College FMCPaed. He is the current President of the Nigerian Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NISPGHAN), member of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) and former executive member of Commonwealth Association of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (CAPGAN).

Professor Abiodun has since worked as Consultant and Teacher in Justus-Liebig Universitatet, Giessen, Germany; University of Benin / University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City; Asir Central Hospital, Saudi Arabia; and Sultan Quaboos University, Muscat, Oman, UAE. He has been an examiner in many universities both at national and international levels as well as supervisor of many postgraduate degree projects for decades.

He is married to Lady (Barr.) Adefunke Abiodun and they are blessed with children.

THE AUTHOR

Born at Arue in the suburbs of Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Chief Anthony Akakhon Anenih grew up in an environment of limited opportunities. His enlistment in the Nigeria Police Force in 1951 opened for him a career and profession where his diligence and precocity made him outstanding in a rapid progression through the ranks from recruit to Commissioner of Police before his voluntary retirement in 1976.

On leaving the Police Force, he ventured into business establishing Yakon Motors, Yakon Chemists in Benin City, the Safeway Supermarket in Warri and the Electronic shop in Enugu and politics where he has played a pivotal role in the making of Governors and equally helped in the making of Presidents of the Federal Government of Nigeria. He was chairman of National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in Bendel State, member of the National Constitutional Conference, National Campaign Director Yar’Adua Presidential Campaign Organization, and National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was one of the pioneers in the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) becoming the Minister for Works and Housing in the Obasanjo first administration. He was chairman of the Board of Trustees, for the second time, of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He received the national honours award of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, CFR, and has also received numerous chieftancy titles and honorary doctorate degree awards from several Universities in Nigeria. Chief Tony Anenih remains relevant in Nigerian politics today – a political colossus, an inimitable tactician and strategist, a master planner, a respected elder statesman who is frequently called upon to calm and stabilize tempestuous political storms.

REALITIES OF NIGERIAN EDUCATION by SAM O. U. IGBE

This book is a collection of the citations written by the author between 1980 and 2011 at different times and in different institutions. Many of them were written at the University of Benin between 1980 and 1988 while the second group of citations were written at Benson Idahosa University between 2009 and 2015. Three of the citations were written for Igbinedion University, Okada in 2003. THE AUTHOR

Philip Aigbona Igbafe, Professor of History and International Studies, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, since 1978 has lectured at various Nigerian universities since 1964. He retired from the University of Benin in 2006 and now lectures at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City. He served as Commissioner for Works and Transport, Bendel State Executive Council 1975 – 1976, and Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs and Culture 1976 – 1978. He was a member of the National Constitutional Conference, Abuja where he was the chairman, Committee on Power Sharing 1994 – 1995. He has also served as chairman and member of several boards and corporations at national and state levels. He is the author of Obaseki of Benin (Heinemann, London 1972), Benin under British Administration: The Impact of Colonial Rule on an African Kingdom, 1897 – 1938 (Longman, London, 1979), The Nemesis of Power: Agho Obaseki and Benin Politics 1897-1956 (Macmillan, 1991) revised and reprinted 2016 (Mindex Publishing Company, Benin City). His forthcoming volume is Troubled Times: Politics, Power and Conflicts in Benin, 1991 – 1993. He has also published widely and internationally in numerous books and academic journals.

He is a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria, FHSN and a recipient of the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR.

The Nemesis of Power is the story of Agho Obaseki, a dependable, efficient and capable agent of the British who filled the vacuum created as a result of the Oba’s deportation by assuming the leading role among Benin chiefs. Agho’s success based on his sterling qualities as a leader and statesman won him British support but made him numerous enemies amongst Benin chiefs.

This account deals with the life and times of Agho Obaseki, a prominent chief, paramount ruler, district head and Iyase of Benin, 1897-1920. The whole spectrum of the times of Agho Obaseki is examined and analysed in sufficient depth to show vividly the factionalism, polarization of the society and the major confrontations between divergent interest groups in colonial Benin. He emerged from the account as a perfect representative of that group of Africans who used the colonial regime to achieve a tenure of power unparalleled in the history of their kingdoms and localities.

 

The Author

Professor P.A. Igbafe graduated in History, University of London in 1961 and obtained his Ph.D degree from the University of Ibadan in 1968. He lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (then University of Ife) 1964-1975. He was appointed Bendel State Commissioner 1975-1978 and appointed Professor of History, University of Benin in 1978. He was an elected member of the National Constitutional Conference 1994-1995. He was made a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria (FHSN) in 2008 and conferred with the national honours award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, MFR, in 2011. FOUNDATIONS OF CLINICAL OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY IN THE TROPICS by Peter N. Ebeigbe

It traces Benin history from the Owere era to Ogisos with emphasis on Ogiso Owodo’s maladministration, the interregnum of Evian as a leader (Okaevbo) and Ogiamien’s insurgency. The history of Ekaladerhan and the Benin – Ife relationships was also brought to bear on how Oba Ewedo ruthlessly put paid to Ogiamienism with the memorable battle at Ekiokpagha in about 1255 AD which ultimately eliminated all forms of republicanism in Benin Kingdom. Concerned persons (indigenes and non-indigenes) where taken aback in 2015 when Ogiamien family tried to resurface the insurgency which had been eliminated about 800 years ago. This book once again is an attempt to trace the historical facts and highlight the truths of the matter for all people of goodwill.

 

THE AUTHORS

Chief (Hon.) Osayomwabo Osemwegie Ero hails from the great Ero family of Urubi, Benin City. Chief Ero is one of the seven Kingmakers in Benin Kingdom.

He has M.Ed Language Art Curriculum, PGDE Education and B.A. (Hons) linguistics and Edo Language (Combined) all from the University of Benin, Benin City and Diploma in Edo Studies, University of Lagos. He has taught in several primary, secondary schools, teacher training colleges and College of Education, Ekiadolor Benin. He later joined the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in 1974 and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (F.R.C.N) where he retired in 1987. He has published many books written in English and Edo Languages. He was honoured with chieftaincy titles of OBAZOGBON (2004), EDOBAYOKHAE (Eghaevbo N’Ogbe) (2011) and OKAO of Evbuerhoba Communities in 2014 respectively by the Oba of Benin Kingdom.  

Mr. S.P. Owie is an educationist, a school administrator and a trained writer. He holds the following Degrees: Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.Ed), University of Calabar, Masters in Adult and Non-formal Education (M.Ed) and Masters in Public Administration (MPA) both from University of Benin, Benin City.
