When I started coaching, hockey was more linear, drills ran in straight lines, players queued up waiting for their turn, and the game was taught through repetition more than reflection. 

It looked organised, but in truth, it wasn’t preparing players for what the modern game demands: adaptability.

Today, everything has shifted. The pace, the skill level, the way players think, it’s all evolved. The best coaches I know are no longer running textbook drills; they’re designing experiences. 

Instead of long lines and closed patterns, it’s small groups, open play, and fluid, game-like situations that force players to think, decide, and adapt.

For me, coaching isn’t about having a perfect drill anymore. It’s about how we use a drill to teach decision-making. The game moves too quickly now to teach it in a rigid, one-dimensional way. 

Players need to read space, interpret pressure, and problem-solve on the move. And as coaches, that means we need to be comfortable adjusting in the blink of an eye, changing a rule, flipping a constraint, or shifting the setup mid-session because the players’ needs changed at that moment.

That’s where the modern hockey mind lives: in the space between structure and freedom.
We still teach technique, but it’s technique that fits the moment, not a textbook position. We still coach shape, but we let the players own the shape through understanding.

This manual isn’t written to tell you the way to coach. It’s written to help you find your way to coach. I’ll share ideas, methods, and frameworks that I use, but the goal is to help you build your own modern philosophy that fits your players, your environment, and your purpose.

Because hockey today doesn’t belong to the coach who knows the most drills, it belongs to the one who teaches players to think.
